Renwen is a young Taiwan alternative junior high school where test scores and rankings didn't exist. The school equally values the diversity of human intelligence, and students come here to explore their callings. However, in able to access to high school and further education, the first graduates of RenWen inevitably faced a standardized admission test, the BCT, which will distribute them to different schools and tracks based on their scores. Will the RenWen students be changed by this testing system?

其中(2014南方影展)我認為最驚人的紀錄片作品有三部...最後要推薦的也是一部驚人的作品,是來自台灣的《學習的理由》。從國中二年級就開始拍攝本片的導演楊逸帆,至今僅是一位大一學生,卻從14歲起便有著超齡的清晰思路和組織能力,不僅故事峰迴路轉、深入淺出,中斷描述考試前後同學們面臨的掙扎節奏感也極佳,有大刀闊斧的爽快感。甚至在後段中,作者從旁觀者身份轉為被攝者,如真實電影般深深涉入議題而無法自拔,從而提煉出結論的尾聲更是驚人。以挖掘台灣幾近變態的考試教育文化主題來說,本片可能是近期最好的作品。
雖然是作者自己親身的經歷,卻沒有自溺式的論述,反而相當理性的思考並呈現自身的學習歷程,讓觀眾更具思辨。難得的是,作者在大部分只能配合或謾罵的十四歲就認真思考升學制度的荒謬,並有決心的完成這一部探討學習與升學的影片,再對應當今教改亂象之下,實在讓「大人們」汗顏。
